An online job board for Meta contains offers for more than 100 in-house lawyers. Shortly after Meta adopted its new name last year, a similar analysis of legal job postings revealed more than 115 open positions, according to a report in Corporate Counsel magazine. Newstead replaced Facebook`s former general counsel, Colin Stretch, who resigned three years ago after being appointed in 2013. Stretch succeeded the firm`s former general counsel, Theodore Ullyot, a former partner at Kirkland & Ellis. Meta is suffering from the announced departure of Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, who will step down at the end of the year. The company has hired legions of lawyers and policy experts as it evolves from a social media platform to other forms of technology such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality, a process that has led to countless legal and regulatory challenges. Meta`s legal group, which has helped Facebook and its various subsidiaries deal with a number of legal and regulatory issues over the years, has been busy attracting new talent in recent months. Meta, which had rapidly expanded its legal department in recent years, cut it on Wednesday as part of 11,000 job cuts aimed at changing the size of the company in response to slowing growth. “Whoever meta lawyers are fired, they will be able to land smoothly. They`re not going to take massive pay cuts, but they may have to show some flexibility,” said legal recruiter Mike Evers. Meta declined to comment on Johnson`s departure and other changes to the legal department in recent months. A senior meta-employee said last fall that the department has about 2,000 employees, stating, “We are essentially one of the largest law firms in the world.” This number of employees increased from 850 in 2018. The 11-year-old Facebook veteran announced on June 1 via rival social media platform LinkedIn that he is now vice president of corporate law at Shopify.

Johnson, who also served as Meta`s deputy general secretary, was one of three in-house lawyers listed in Facebook`s filing for an IPO that raised $16 billion in 2012. Shopify has hired several in-house lawyers since the Canadian e-commerce company revamped its leadership in law and government affairs last summer. The company experienced its business boom during the coronavirus pandemic. Jennifer Newstead, who was hired by Facebook as general counsel in 2019, took the title of general counsel in October, according to archived internet records from the Menlo Park, California-based company`s management page. He`s reconnecting with Jessica Hertz, a former Facebook attorney who joined the company last year as general counsel. The move comes three months after attorney Jean Niehaus left Meta to join Shopify as vice president of product and sales, according to her LinkedIn profile and documents filed with the California State Bar. Meta did not rank Newstead among the top five highest-paid executives in 2021, according to a proxy circular filed for this year. Securities filings show that he has sold more than $5 million in meta-shares since the beginning of 2021.

Newstead still owns more than $3.7 million in shares of the company, according to Bloomberg. He`s had a “long fun trip” on Facebook, Johnson said in an email, and he will be “eternally grateful to have the opportunity to work with so many extraordinary people on impactful issues for over a decade.” Hertz did not respond to a request for comment on whether she tricked other Facebook lawyers into joining her on Shopify. Kling, a former partner at Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, joined Facebook in early 2009, making him one of the firm`s longest-serving lawyers. He left in November and is now on sabbatical, according to his LinkedIn profile. He could not be reached for comment. Ullyot and David Kling — a former deputy general counsel and secretary general replaced by Kelly — were also featured in Facebook`s IPO prospectus. Ullyot left the social media giant a year after going public. Ullyot was chosen in 2008 to succeed another former Facebook general counsel, Rudy Gadre. Christopher Kelly, Facebook`s senior general counsel and chief privacy officer, is now co-owner of the NBA`s Sacramento Kings.
